Whats to come?

After seeing and reading a lot of arguments about gun control in the United States I started to picture all of these proposed scenarios.  You have people on all points of the spectrum ranging from the banning of all guns to the legislation of all types of weapons.  These are the people, in my opinion, who are making coming to a final compromise much more difficult.  Members of the NRA used to promote gun safety and knowledge.  Now most of them are just firing back at those who want to change the system already in place.  Also some politicians are going about making change the wrong way.  For example using publicity stunts to convince the more influential citizens of their cause.  Both sides are causing a major tryst and widespread misunderstanding in the American public.

I believe that instead of just using the wake of the recent tragedies to promote your cause, use convincing arguments that use fact and expert opinions from an unbiased source.  Help the voters understand your cause by clearly stating intentions with plans on how to execute and explain the repercussions.  If the politicians can inform the public clearly than maybe there would not be people out there quoting the 2nd amendment incorrectly and others calling for a cease to all sales of firearms.  What you would get are people following an agreed upon set of laws to help govern the way we protect ourselves.

Check They’re Record!

One of the best ways our current laws have been able to protect the public from firearms getting into the wrong hands is background checks.  Throughout the country and its many different gun laws, all states check records of all applicants.  In my opinion ,the state of California is the best state to use an example of how this law can keep us safe.

Though it is hard to relate background checks to the success rate of a state’s gun laws, but it does show that the right steps are being taken.  What I can say is that California does have one of the lowest rates of gun deaths ranging from homicide to accidents.  It is one of the few states that is not making it impossible to buy guns, but making you register more items in your name.

California’s new proposed gun laws make it so that purchasing firearms and ammunition are more monitored.  Not only is your record being checked when you are buying a firearm, but also when you buy ammunition.  Other laws proposed like these  will make it so that deadlier ammo and firearms will not even be available for purchase.

With new laws coming and tougher restrictions being placed one thing should not be changed.  The constant checking of backgrounds is key to the constant halting of illegal gun sales.

Just the Facts

For my first post I thought I would give some general information on Gun Control before I start posting more in Depth examples.  In wake of the several shootings that have occurred recently in the United States people have been calling to a change in our current gun laws.  Before I explain some of the laws currently in place, Im gonna show some facts about gun ownership in the US.  Based on the most recent data collected in 2010,  the US population was 307 million people.  In the United States roughly 300 million firearms were sold.  Almost 20% of single adults owned firearms and 40% of household said they had a gun in the house.   In that same poll more the majority of those people who owned guns said they purchased them for protection against crime.

To acquire a firearm you must go through a process that is specific to the state that you are in.  States gun laws are divided into three classes “shall issue” “may issue” “no issue”.  This refers to whether or not a state will issue a qualified applicant a concealed weapons permit.  California falls under the “may issue” class.  However it is well known that california has very strict gun policies.  First and foremost, there is a ten day waiting period for your weapon.  The sale of automatic weapons and short barreled rifles are prohibited.  The buyer must pass a background check and may not purchase another until at least 3 months has passed.

I do not think that educated gun owners are doing anything wrong by purchasing weapons and keeping them safe.  I think that the laws that we have in place do keep us safe, but there is room for improvement.  With meetings being held in congress and people petitioning throughout the country Im sure good changes will come and responsible gun owners will not be penalized.
